P3 Assembly Machine
Project Description:
A door hinge assembly machine to install two bushings and a riveted pin into two assemblies that have two major stampings in each.
Challenge:
This machine would essentially combine two machines in one that could be run by a single operator. It was required to produce a perfect peen condition on the product without breakage. Differences in the pin lengths presented a particular design challenge, to have the equipment advance then retract with enough room for grippers to pick up the parts and unload.
Results:
The initial design called for a press unit to come in, move back to perform the peen operation and then clear the unload gripper. In consultation with our toolmakers, we found that the part could be removed by rotating it. On seeing our final solution, the customer said “the peen is better than any we have had (in our plant) before.”
